CleanBreak.com: Why Google.orgs Enhanced Geothermal Investment
is good for Canada
The following is an article by Tyler Hamilton, columnist for the
Toronto Star. He looks into Google.orgs investment in EGS
and the connection to Canada.
If
enhanced geothermal, or EGS, could be made economical the implications
are enormous. Were talking baseload, emission-free electricity
on a massive scale that, over time, could eliminate the need for
coal-fired or nuclear power plants. It would also silence the
critics of renewables who says wind and solar are inadequate because
of their intermittancy. Sure, perhaps all this wont happen
in a lifetime, but it bodes well for future generations who can
look forward to ample supplies of solar, wind, and geothermal
power and their support of electric vehicles.

BBC News: Google and GE in energy
deal
Google and General Electric appear to be discussing teaming
up to develop clean energy technology and electricity. The
goal to make renewable energy more useful and accessible. Google
is a supporter of geothermal power generation but maintain that
the benefits of renewable energy will not be realized without
updating power transmission lines into a smart grid
to let consumers track and control the type of power they use
and when.
The
internet giant Google has teamed up with technology multinational
General Electric to develop a smart electric power
grid and promote clean energy.
Both
companies want to make renewable energy more accessible and useful.
In
a joint statement they said: Our economic, environmental
and security challenges require we use electricity more efficiently
and generate it from cleaner sources.
Clean
energy is eminently doable and solvable, said GE ceo Jeff
Immelt.
This
just makes good sense, said Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper Annouces
Geological Resource Mapping of Canadas Arctic
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced a major project to
map geological resources in Canadas Arctic. A total of $100
million has been set aside over the next five years to complete
an on-shore geo-mapping exercise of the North.
What
weve found so far is merely the tip of the proverbial iceberg,
Harper said Managed properly, Canadas share of this
incredible endowment will fuel the prosperity of our country for
generations. And geo-mapping will pave the way for the resource
development of the future.

CanGEA
supports the idea of mapping and understanding of our natural/geological
resources, and we would agree that the known energy and mining
resources are just a start. In the Toronto Star article though,
there is lots of talk about conventional energy resource potential
(natural gas, oil, diamonds, gold) but no mention of geothermal
energy? Even though there is renewable heat energy potential in
the arctic, both for electricity and direct heat; will geothermal
mapping be part of that funding?
